about

Music written for 'Be Water', a documentary about screen legend Bruce Lee produced by ESPN for their '30 for 30' series.
The score was composed by An Tôn Thất and Goh Nakamura, each of them providing half of the music load.

Unfortunately, due to a serious contractual conflict between ESPN and An Tôn Thất regarding the copyright, all his music has been pulled from the film after the premiere at the 2020 Sundance Festival, and replaced by new music by Goh Nakamura.

Here is all the music composed for the project, some which has been actually used in the film, and some rejected by the producers after the last edit of the film was finalised.
The composition process proved an arduous one, due to the producers' constant restricting demands, but it was a good challenge to find a way to still be creative within the limitations.
Some themes (Funerals, Road to Hong Kong) originate from other projects and have been reworked for the film.
A handful of pieces were co-composed by An Tôn Thất and Go Nakamura (America, Our Story, Memory I & II, Flight of Cranes), with the two musicians sending music back and forth to each other between Taipei to Los Angeles. However the music was eventually shelved when brand new music had to be composed after the final edit of the film was locked.

The music of 'Be Water' reflects the spirit of two composers who grew up in a Western country but kept connected to their Asian roots.
