Between Shadow and Soul (Giữa bóng tối và tâm hồn), the monochrome / silent reworking of Ash Mayfair's debut feature 'The Third Wife' called for a totally new score. The challenge was to start composing music just a few months after the original colour version had been completed.
Since it was to be a silent film, the big question was how to give the music a sonic identity to guide the audience and yet leave enough room to observe, think and pay attention to the many details on the screen and not be intrusive.
The monochrome treatment totally changed how the film and the narrative were to be approached. The human drama was immediate while the lushness of the period setting and the landscape almost disappeared.

I conceived the score like a through-composed tone poem and tried to keep a balance between sonic substances and pure music. I let Ash and Julie Béziau - the editor, play with all the material I had written, then restructured everything to give it a musical balance and coherence.
What an odyssey that was!
