about

Third collaboration between French-Vietnamese composer Tôn Thất An and Japanese choreographer Jo Kanamori, based on the three Hoffmann's tales which also inspired Offenbach's opera.
Creating music after such a heavyweight of the lyrical repertoire was no small challenge, but I decided to go back to the source and find ideas from Hoffmann's writing.

Jo Kanamori had very personal ideas about how to transpose these tales for dance and for Japan. His concept was that the character of Hoffmann was danced by a different person for each act, which led to conceive the music in the same manner: each act finds its musical inspiration in a different genre and style.
Act 1: ballet music from the 19th century, with reminiscences of the Russian masters, French 19th century opera and Léo Delibes' ballet Coppélia.
Act 2: Japanese theatre and Asian ritual music
Act 3: 20th century minimalist music and film scores.
