Original score for 'Song Lang' Leon Le's first feature film. A story between a tough, embittered gangster and a young performer of Cải lương (a form of musical theatre in South Vietnam) in the Saigon of the 80's.

"In terms of music style, I dwelled between atmospheric electric guitars, which draws a dark and brooding portrait of Dũng, the gangster. Since Cải lương music plays a predominant part in the film, I felt that the score didn;t need to underline that.
I was very much inspired by the tone of Hong Kong and Korean film noirs, with slight hints of Vietnamese traditional music. The lighter, more luminous side is expressed through acoustic instruments: solo cello, acoustic guitar, a small string ensemble and piano. Leon Le let me follow my instinct and only insisted on a more lyrical approach for the final scene of the film (Elegy). After spending a whole week with many unsuccesful attempts, I finally 'got't it and called my long time cellist friend Christophe Boissière to play the theme as well as the other parts."
