about

"There are times in my life when I felt that, for the sake of its own creation, art makes itself known and we artists simply become a conduit in service of a higher truth. This was certainly the case for the music of The Third Wife. I had never worked with An Ton That before this project but there was an instant vibration in our first meeting that made me feel like I could trust him immediately. When An visited the set, I was improvising a scene where the girls would play and sing a lullaby (Bèo dạt mây trôi) to each other. Without meaning to, I had asked the actresses to sing a song that was as personal and dear to An as it was to me. Over the next eight months, serendipitous moments like this would happen over and over. The Third Wife was a mesmerizing, seductive mistress that would not let us be free until she is satisfied. If the landscape of the film was her body, the music was her voice. An’s instinct sometimes would lead him to finish the composition for a scene even before I was done with the editing, the magical specificity of which defies my attempt to rationalize with an explanation. A heart-breaking cello line would match perfectly with a melancholy bird taking flight. Raindrops on the screen would fall inexplicably in rhythm with An’s percussions. Music that An had written for more than ten years before we met would find itself a perfect home inside the film. At some point, I stopped trying to understand and instead felt grateful to have touched the unknown. The Third Wife is the first of the many collaborations we will have. As a director, there is no gift more precious than seeing other artists loving and dedicating their all to the film. As an artist, there is no experience I value more than having the opportunity to be a part of something larger than ourselves."
